Parents of high school students often feel overwhelmed and bewildered by all the information about the standardized exams students must take in preparation for college. At Academics Plus Tutoring Center, we are often asked questions such as: When should my child take the SAT? What does the SAT measure? What are the SAT subject tests? How many SAT subject tests must my child take? Which SAT subject tests should my child take?
We figured the questions our students ask are most likely the same questions our readers have, so over the next few weeks we will post the most frequently asked questions and our responses. Feel free to post your own questions in our comment box, and we will do our best to answer your question as well.
When should students take SAT Subject tests?
The short answer to this question is: Students should take SAT subject tests when they are prepared to perform to potential. The long and more comprehensive answer to this question often takes consideration of a multitude of factors. Many students wait until their junior year to take the SAT subject tests and are often overwhelmed with the amount of studying required for all the optional and mandatory college entrance exams, as well as schoolwork and finals. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to encourage your child to prepare early. Determine if there are SAT subject tests that can be taken in 9th or 10th grade, get outside help and take the tests. SAT subject tests that might fall into this category are certain science and history tests. Again we’d like to make the suggestion, that if your child plans to take any SAT Subject exams, to do additional preparation for the exam as much of the material covered on the exam is not usually covered in standard class curriculum.
