Parents of high school students often feel overwhelmed and bewildered by all the information about the standardized exams students must take in preparation for college. At Academics Plus Tutoring Center, we are often asked questions such as: When should my child take the SAT? What does the SAT measure? What are the SAT subject tests? How many SAT subject tests must my child take? Which SAT subject tests should my child take?
We figured the questions our students ask are most likely the same questions our readers have, so over the next few weeks we will post the most frequently asked questions and our responses. Feel free to post your own questions in our comment box, and we will do our best to answer your question as well.
Should my child prepare for the SAT subject tests with a tutor?
One on one SAT subject test tutoring can be one of the most effective ways for students to prepare. The process can help the student identify the areas that need special focus, and help the students develop effective test-taking skills. At Academics Plus Tutoring Center, we help students develop the knowledge and skills needed for each of the specific SAT subject exams and since we have been working with students for such a long time, we know the common pitfalls (the places students get jammed up, lose their way and doubt themselves) and can therefore, help them navigate around these problem areas.
Our tutors help the student streamline and maximize their efforts by guiding them to focus on the most revelent concept areas and in addition, can act as a helpful support system, assisting students through what can potentially be a challenging time (it is common for a student’s level of motivation, self-esteem, and confidence to drop when they are struggling with the SAT subject tests). Students can get overwhelmed and often experience a great deal of stress around the exams which can impact their well being as well as their performance on the exam and in school.
